Now that Crest is out I’m slightly easing up on the hectic work schedule and sneaking in some much needed sleep and down time. My 2013 schedule has been rather challenging.
The Atlantic’s salt perfumed the air everywhere we went. The fog rolling through cobblestone streets and the Old World feel of many sections of the city created a haunting, poetic atmosphere that easily brought to mind the works of Pessoa and Saramago (two of my favorite writers).
I watched Pacific Rim yesterday and felt rather let down. I might be the only one who feels this way. I like del Toro’s work on Pan’s Labyrinth and the sequences of kaijyu and jaeger were wonderfully shot. It’s the stuff I grew up on – Voltron, Gundam, and every other anime combining mech with monsters – so it was great to see it as a live action film. I had issues with small things (lackluster acting, clunky dialogue), but the biggest problem I had was with the character Mako Mori.
While I appreciated the casting of an actual Japanese for the Japanese role and the integration of a leading female character whose purpose wasn’t just to be the romantic interest, I was highly disappointed with the timid, soft-spoken, subservient / katana-wielding ninja Asian female stereotype. There wasn’t much depth to her besides those token roles.
In other news, I’ve been working on a new website for about six months but I obviously haven’t managed to squeeze out enough time to get it done. Hopefully, I’ll wrap that up this week along with the final proofs of Crest’s paperbacks. Once that’s done, I’ll do a big giveaway celebrating the book’s print release.
How is your week/weekend going?
